There have been entire academic studies and books published on the design history of books like Lolita. Honestly the entire Penguin Classics imprint survives on this as an entire business model. One of my favorite ways to visualize how much book cover design has changed over the years is to track one classic book that tends to get redesigned every few years and see how the designs have evolved. The point is, I’ve spent my entire professional career in book covers, and I’ve absorbed/studied a lot of the history of book design. So my last 6 months of school I also worked full time.
